Often times we find ourselves faced with situations where, in their simplest forms, we can choose to follow the Savior Jesus Christ or Satan. We are counseled to "choose you this day whom ye will serve." (Joshua 24:15) Sometimes we don't see the day to day things leading us either towards or away from Christ, so the decision to choose is made alot more difficult. I'm not referring to the choices we need to make such as what shirt we wear or what to eat for breakfast, but I'm talking about the choices of how to treat other people or how to change ourselves to align our lives with His teachings. In the Book of Mormon, the Prophet Nephi tells us that "men are free according to the flesh; and all things are given them which are expedient unto man. And they are free to choose liberty and eternal life, through the great Mediator of all men, or to choose captivity and death, according to the captivity and power of the devil' for he seeketh that all men might be miserable like unto himself." So we understand that we must choose Christ and are counseled to do so, but how do we choose Christ. Do we choose Him by vocally admitting He is the Christ or by doing what he did? Nephi continues with a great plea saying, "And now, my sons, I would that ye should look to the great Mediator, and hearken unto his great commandments; and be faithful unto his words, and choose eternal life according to the will of his Holy Spirit." We need to follow His commandments, and be faithful to His words. When we obey His commandments, we follow the Lords own counsel when He said "for the works which ye have seen me do that shall ye also do; for that which ye have seen me do even that shall ye do;" (3 Nephi 27:21) The path of the disciple is one that follows Christ in all things. I think there is an excellent connection in Nephi's counsel to follow Christs "great commandments" to Christs "great commandments" from the New Testament. In the book of Matthew, chapter 22 verses 36-40 a lawyer asked Jesus:"Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul. and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets." Christs' great commandments were to love the Lord and to love our neighbor. If we are doing these two things than by effect we are fulfilling the Lords commission to do what He has done in obeying the commandments. It is not always easy to show our love for others and often times we don't. That is why we continue on the path of Discipleship by repenting or changing and becoming better. The path is ultimately to lead us to become like Jesus Christ. We cannot do that by just sitting around, it takes an active effort to do what Christ commands us to. I hope and pray that we can all be a little bit better every day by following His Great Commandments.
