Build on the Rock

I worked in constuction for a little bit before I came on my mission and learned alot about foundations. I worked for a company that did grading. Grading is just making sure the dirt is level and compact enough so that the foundation of the building would be secure. I had every little boys dream job. I worked in the worlds biggest sand box. To my surprise, however, there was alot more to it than just digging holes and making mounds. What we called a "First move" was the first step toward making the site usuable to construct a building. The process consisted of removing debri such as pipes, copper wire, roots, or any other waste materials that shouldn't be there. As we started moving the dirt to where it was needed and from where it wasn't, we continued to find and remove debri that wasnt visible on the surface. A First move could take up to a few months to complete because it required not only all the waste to be removed but that the dirt be at the correct elevation, wetness, compression, etc. After the first move we would leave the job site only to return to finish the Second and Third moves.
Christ has given us the promise that if we build on Him we cannot fall. Preparing our lives for the foundation Christ has promised us, is much like a First move. He has given us specific requirements for His foundation to be sure in our lives. In the broadest sense, He requires that we follow Him. When we follow Him, we in a sense, we remove all of the debri from our lives. We remove the bad habits that can seperate us from Him. We smooth out the mounds and fill the voids so that His foundation can lay securely in our lives.
When we look at the greatest foundations they are built on the greatest material (dirt). The material is at the correct specifications. And most importantly there are no voids in between the material and the concrete that is the foundation. Likewise we should do all we can to remove any voids that would cause us to be seperated from Christ our Lord and Savior, who "is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall."
Christ, the foundation on which we should build, is set. But whether or not it sits on good material is up to us. So let us not cut short the Blessing that Christ has promised us of not being able to fall from His foundation by giving adequete time, attention, and dedication to bring our lives in line with His will. This is my hope and prayer.
