I am sure that you're totally fed up with me banging on about my country girl credentials but 'the outdoors' is such a massive source of inspiration for me that I just can't help myself. I apologise now but sometimes I wonder why, when nature gives us such amazingly beautiful things to work with do we often fall back to the weird and wonderful?
So, today's post is all about the humble pinecone - any autumnal walk in the woods will give you hundreds of these delicate delights to work with and think of the colour combinations that would look so good with the brown of the cones? Give me sage green, pale blues, dusky pinks and burnt oranges as backdrops for pinecone prettiness please.
However, the thought of crunching through woods carpeted with fallen pinecones is making me think of lines from one of my favourite poems by WB Yeats - 'But I being poor have only my dreams; I have spread my dreams under your feet; Tread softly for you tread upon my dreams'. We so often walk over things that could be so special and so beautiful and that applies to everything, from pinecones and leaves to dream and love...
Above - now I'm not a fan of silken ring cushions but my goodness, how naturally heavenly is this? Love the rings place on the cone and the way the bride and groom are cupping the pinecone and their rings looks so caring and gentle, I just adore this image. Honestly, wedding DIY doesn't come much easier than this! Image - Red Bubble
Above - totally adorable place cards. Here, the individual 'petals' of the pinecones have been snipped off and then re-glued to form little flowers. Such a gorgeous idea and I'm loving the purpley-blue of the card against the brown as well. Image - Martha Stewart
Above - now isn't this how cake tables should look? Way more interesting and impressive than a little round table draped in a white cloth (worse - a creased cloth!) The cake itself looks gorgeous with the pinecone details and that rough, almost bark-like, icing but it's the nightlights sunk into the wood base that just get me. I know, we can't all do this but wow, what an idea... Image - via My Wedding
Above - such a simple pinecone bouquet but how perfectly it contrasts with the whites and creams of the bride and groom's outfits? Perfect for winter when there aren't many seasonal flowers around and if you want to avoid higher prices for flowers and/or the eco impact of air freighting, this is a wonderful option. Above - now this is a really easy DIY option for little decorations around your venue. A couple of cones and some sprigs of green tucked into a little container. Jam jars would work well here and you could use these to line stairs, on a seating card, gift or guest book table or even on the bar, dessert table or buffet table. Image - Elizabeth Ann Designs
Above - such a simple but oh-so effective idea. Here, the pine cone petals have been snipped off the cones again and this time used to form bigger flowers (that have also been rubbed with a subtle hint of gold). The flowers are then been attached to a wrap of orangey velvety ribbon and attached to a hurricane lantern. I have to admit, I will be making these for my own home come the autumn. Can't you just imagine groups of these on tables, along walkways or even in a big fireplace? Image - Martha Stewart
Above - more easy wedding DIY and this time, it's seating cards. The cards have just been tucked into the cones and laid on a table. If you wanted to make this a really sensory display, splash a few drops of essential oil onto each cone to create a beautifully scented space. You could use this idea for place markers too (or bags of scented cones as favours - they make wonderful decorations at home just piled into bowls, especially around Christmas) Image - MMB Photography via The Knot
Above - more beautiful cone bouquets, this time with a hit of green foliage and a wrap of indulgent chocolate ribbon. It can't be just me that can almost smell that image?! The leaves, the greenery, the fresh air - how perfect! Image - Two Chics
Above - such a cute bout! A great buttonhole here, pinecone, a flower and some greenery - it looks great and that cone adds a good dose of masculinity to this design. This would make a pretty corsage for women as well (ask your florist to use magnetic attachments for women's corsages rather than pins as they can damage or rip delicate fabrics) Image - via Intimate Weddings
Above - here's another something I'm going to be making. This pinecone garland is great and isn't too tricky to make yourself. The cones have hooks hammered into their bases and the hooks are then poked through the ribbon to form the garland. You'd need to use good quality substantial ribbon that won't rip but this look good with any colour. Perfect for a top table, fireplace, doorway or almost anywhere to be honest! Above - now this is just a wonderful display. There pincone 'flowers' and cones are lit from within with hidden fairy lights. I imagine the glow from lots of these dotted around at night would look rather magical. There are instructions on Martha Stewart's website if you want to make this yourselves - it's not the easiest DIY project admittedly but worth a try! Alternatively, put a layer of cones in a large glass vase then add some battery fairy lights and fill the rest of the vase with more cones. Flick the switch and admire! Image - Martha Stewart
