Todays topic of interest is repentance. A lasting change of heart and habits. The power it has to cleanse us from all impurities. It can help us grow. Repentance can help us overcome the natural man, which we find in Mosiah, is an "enemy to God." (Mosiah 3:19)
So there once was this guy we'll call Satan. He was head of the Anti-Christ board of affairs. One day he called the board together to brainstorm some new ideas on how to stop Gods children from returning to Him. He and all of his dominions opened up their meeting by opening the floor for whoever had a new idea. After a few moments of silence, Satan takes takes the floor. He says he's got this great idea that is the greatest idea since bottled water.
He starts out by telling everyone that they should tell the children of God to read their scriptures. He tells them to get us to pray. He tells them to get us to go to church and to follow all of the commandments. Just as everyone is getting worked up thinking this was an imposter in the place of their infamous ruler, He turns up one side of his lips and says in a devilish way, "Tell the children of God to start tomorrow." Seeing that this idea didn't make much sense to his evil grunt workers, he explains it to them. "You see?" started out Satan, "Tomorrow will never come for these foolish people. If we can convince them to put it off for just one more day, the day will never come when they actually do it."
Repentace is changing our ways. Some of us need to change the fact that we don't read. Others need to change by praying. Whatever it is by changing our ways and aligning our lives with Christ's teachings we are in a sense repenting. We are acknowledging that we need to do better and then actually do better.
The prophet, Alma, taught us not to procrastinate the day when we repent in Alma 34:33-35
33"...I beseech of you that ye do not procrastinate the day of your repentance until the end; for after this day of life, which is given us to prepare for eternity, behold, if we do not improve our time while in this life, then cometh the night of darkness wherein there can be no labor performed.
34"Ye cannot say, when ye are brought to that awful crisis, that I will repent, that I will return to my God. Nay, ye cannot say this; for that same spirit which doth possess your bodies at the time that ye go out of this life, that same spirit will have power to possess your body in that eternal world.
35"For behold, if ye have procrastinated the day of your repentance even until death, behold, ye have become subjected to the spirit of the devil, and he doth seal you his;"
Christ continually invites us to repent and become better. Who shall we listen to more? Christ or Satan. Often times we don't see our decisions in terms of Christ or Satan, but that is what it comes down to. If we are not serving Christ and his purposes, we are serving the devil.(Luke16:13, 3 Nephi 13:24, Matthew 6:24) We should do everything in our power to put out the thoughts of the adversary. He will do all he can to get us to put off God for as long as he possibly can. There was a great quote I've heard, and I'm sure it's quite popular, but it goes like this. "The procrastinators meeting has been pushed back till next week." Let's not push back the day of our repentance. I invite each who read this to make a goal and set plans to reach that goal to change something that we know is not in line with Gods will. I promis that as you set that goal and make plans, the Lord will recognize your willingness to repent and be better. He will bless you with the strength and direction you need to accomplish this. I promise this in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
