Election what..??

“The election is over, Noynoy (Aquino) is our President and Mar Roxas is our Vice President. Unfortunately for the Philippines, the cheating part isn’t over yet.”

-- That is what my Mom would usually tell me whenever I ask her about the upcoming election.

With all these election hype going on, I just felt the need to post an entry that (I hope) would help some of you in deciding who you should and should not vote. But before I begin, let me just first accentuate the fact that this post is not intended to promote any candidates.

There is only a week left until Election Day; and after watching numerous campaign ads and listening to candidates debate (or rather throw snide comments at each other) endlessly, I pretty much have a good idea on who will win the elections.

The media never fails to keep us updated on the latest polls regarding the standing of various political candidates in certain places within the country. This has been a great impact in influencing the general public, particularly those within the marginalized sector of the society, on who they THINK will save our country from poverty and the lack of stability of its government.

What we fail to realize is that we become too dependent on these candidates; too dependent that we end up placing all our faith in them up to a point that we expect TOO MUCH from them. That’s one of our problems: EXPECTING TOO MUCH. We expect that once a person has been declared or appointed as a public servant, we expect things to be better at once. We expect more money or a much better life the next day, which is absolutely impossible. Did you ever wonder how much pressure these political figures are going through in trying to meet our standards? While it is true that some of them have hidden schemas in mind, I believe that they too would want to make this country a better place to live in. Yes, they want to become a bajillionaire, but with that also comes the hope of becoming a good leader to his country, someone whom the whole Philippines will be proud of.

Let us all wake up and face reality. I believe that all of us are familiar with the saying, “Nobody’s perfect”. I doubt that anyone would attest to that quote’s validity. Nobody’s perfect, so don’t expect these candidates to be perfect; because if they were, they wouldn’t be here on Earth. Do not expect them to be flawless and to not make mistakes, because that is outright unjust and unfair to them. These people are not superheroes, they are human beings JUST LIKE ALL OF US non-political-ish (LOL) people, and they are just doing their jobs; they make mistakes, and they learn from it. So let us all treat them the same way we would treat a father who forgot to buy us “pasalubongs”, or a best friend who accidentally told your secret to a friend of a friend. Give them the chance to prove to us that they are indeed worthy of ruling our country, and that we did not made the mistake of voting for the wrong candidate.

To our future leaders:

Consider yourselves as fortunate and special people who have the responsibility of guiding and representing our country. We do not expect you to be perfect because it will only leave us disappointed and disheartened as we always are. We will not blame you for every shortcomings that will happen in our lives, but please do understand that as the leaders of this country we hold you up to a higher standard of behavior. We only expect you to make good use of your knowledge and experiences in helping this country out of its poverty and misery. We look up to you as our surrogate father/mother, and we expect you to treat us the way a prudent father/mother will treat his/her children. Please do not let us down because this is our last hope of having a better Philippines. Stay true to your words, keep your promises, and we promise to return the favor back to you.

Don't forget to smile! :)
-XOXO-
