Before I introduce the Top 6 Contenders for Presidency, let me first give you guys a review on the qualifications for a person to become a President.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- at least forty (40) years of age
- a registered voter
- able to read and write
- a Filipino citizen by birth
- a resident of the Philippines for at least ten (10) years immediately preceding election
Unfortunately for us, there isn’t a “bullet point” that requires a limit on educational attainment or a degree on some politics-related course.
Oh well… now that we’re all familiar with the basics, let’s begin.
Noynoy Aquino
AGE: 49
POLITICAL PARTY: Liberal Party (LP)
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND:
Bachelor of Arts in Economics, Ateneo de Manila University
LEGISLATIVE PERFORMANCE:
Senate: 3 years
Bills filed: None
Laws passed: None
Congress: 9 years
Deputy: Speaker (not quite)
Bills filed: 8
Laws passed: None
EXECUTIVE PERFORMANCE:
None
OTHER FIELDS:
former Chairman, Cooperatives
former National President, Philippines Jaycees
Chairman, August Twenty-One Movement
Representative, 2nd District of Tarlac (2001-2007)
Vice Chairperson, Civil, Political, and Human Rights, Public Order and Safety (11th and 12th Congress)
Chairperson, Senate Committee on Local Government
Vice Chairman, Liberal Party
WORK EXPERIENCE:
Retail Sales Supervisor, Nike Shoes
Assistant for Advertising and Promotion, Mondragon
Vice President, Best Security Agency Corporation (family owned)
Instra Starta Assurance Corporation (family owned)
Field Services Manager, Azucarera (family owned)
CIVIL STATUS: In a relationship with Hon. Shalani San Ramon Soledad
When the late Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino, Jr. was killed in 1989, his late wife, former Philippine President Corazon Aquino, took over and was elected as the 11th President of the Republic of the Philippines.
This year, upon the death of his legendary mother, Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino, III found himself in the same situation where his mother had once been. Most critics and political analyst would refer to this as the resurgence of the “yellow fever” (as yellow being the trademark of former President Cory Aquino).
Not everyone can say that Noynoy is a well-distinguished politician, owing to the fact that he has remained as a “wallflower” during his entire term as a Senator. Apparently, the only credentials that he has right now is that he is the son of Ninoy and Cory Aquino and the brother of Kris Aquino-Yap.
Noynoy should realize that basking in the glory of his famous family is not enough for him to become President. He needs to establish his own political persona. I personally do not know what Noynoy has accomplished, thus I am not entirely convinced that he deserves to become the next President of my country.
What has he done? What will he do IF he becomes the next President?
Just because his iconic mother died does not mean that he should be our next President. When former President Cory Aquino died, the thought of Noynoy running for President nor Vice President did not even crossed my mind.
VOTE WISELY.
Gibo Teodoro
AGE: 46
POLITICAL PARTY: LAKAS-KAMPI-Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD)
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND:
- Bachelor of Science in Commerce, Major in Financial Institutions, De La Salle University Manila

NDCC Chief
OTHER FIELDS:
Colonel – Philippine Air Force Reserve Force

Licensed Commercial Pilot
CIVIL STATUS: Married, 1 Son
Without taking into consideration the death of former president Cory Aquino, Manny Villar’s early campaigning, and Joseph Estrada’s unfinished term, Gibo Teodoro would have been leading the presidential race. But then again, everything that I have previously mentioned seems to be a little too farfetched, don’t you think?
Gilbert Teodoro stands out among the top presidential candidates being the most fluent and well-educated candidate. But despite his good credentials – both educational and political – Gibo fails to nab the top of the presidential polls due to issues linking him with Gloria Arroyo.
Unlike a few of the presidential candidates who relies heavily on media ad placements and catchy campaign-slash-show tunes, Gibo sells himself as a candidate by engaging face-to-face with his adversaries; he makes it a point to attend every forum or debate. As a matter of fact, I have never listened or watched any presidential forum without Gibo in it. And in each of these forums, he never fails to standout because of wit and his eloquence.
It is without a doubt that Gilbert Teodoro has a clear understanding of the reality and the latest issues concerning our country. And because of these, people are stopping to rethink their predilections and give their support to him instead.
I believe the only question left now is whether or not Gibo Teodoro is under PGMA. Because if he is, (and I say this with all due respect) nakakahiya naman dahil sinasayang niya lang ang ‘galing at talino’ niya. Being someone’s “puppet” in the government is, for me, one of the most humiliating thing you could do to yourself. Everyone has to understand that IT’S NOT ALWAYS ABOUT MONEY.
Manny Villar
AGE: 59
POLITICAL PARTY: Nacionalista Party (NP)
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
BA Business Administration and MA Accountancy, University of the Philippines
LEGISLATIVE EXPERIENCE
Senate: 9 years
Senate Chairs: 3
Senate President
Bills Filed: 737
Laws Passed: 10
Congress: 9 years
Congress Speaker
Congress: Top Filer
EXECUTIVE PERFORMANCE
None
OTHER FIELDS:
OFW Helpline
Manpower on Wheel (mobile livelihood training)
Entrepreneurship Caravan
WORK EXPERIENCE
SGV – Auditor
Emst and Young – Member
Financial Analyst
Real Estate – Entrepreneur
CIVIL STATUS Married, 3 kids
Every time I ride a cab, I never fail to ask the drivers who they will vote for the upcoming election; and they always give me the same answer: “Kahit sino, ‘wag lang si Villar.” And that makes me wonder what did Manny Villar do to make this people hate him with such a deep passion? From being the poll-topping candidate, Manny Villar is now slowly going down the slope.
If you take a good look at him, Manny Villar seems to have it all - a good track record, he is a people person, and I believe his knowledge and expertise in business can help him in handling complex problems; not to mention his good credentials. With all these things taken into consideration, he seems like the perfect man for the job. BUT let us not forget that roses still have thorns.
During the past few months, his credibility has slowly been tarnished by the alleged anomaly of double insertion of funds to an item of the annual budget that happens to be in favor to his real estate. Other than that, there had also been multiple charges of corruption against him. I have read somewhere that Senators have a pork barrel of P200 million annually. With a huge sum of money like that, who wouldn’t be tempted to skim a few of it for their personal spending? I kid, I kid.
So that made me wonder, if Senators have a pork barrel of P200 million annually, how much more does the President have? And after spending billions of pesos for his presidential campaign, how in the world is Manny Villar planning to get his money back? Thoughts? Well, does the pork barrel issue answers my question?
I also have some qualms about his over-the-top spending for campaign materials and shiz. He has been spending billions of money just for this stupid campaign and stamping relief good donations with his name (talk about inconspicuous campaigning) during the Ondoy tragedy. Yes, I do understand the fact that he has not yet filed his certificate of candidacy during those times, but I believe all of us would agree that that is considered as an early political campaigning.
He has already proven himself and made a mark during former president Joseph Estrada’s impeachment. Instead of continuously spending for his campaign, he should have just laid low and focus more on involving himself with what’s really important: and that is providing help to our less fortunate brothers and sisters.
If he gets elected as President, I wouldn’t be surprised if he changes the country’s name from “The Philippines” to “Camella Homes” or better yet “Manny Villar’s Ultimate Camella Homes” or “Ehmagawd-I-finally-own-the-Philippines-slash-Camella-Homes”. Let us not forget that the President has the power of eminent domain. Meaning, this gives him the right to seize every parcel of land he wants to have – be it for government consumption or for himself alone (which will be difficult to prove).
So let us all think hard about who will vote and ask ourselves these questions:
- Did he steal public money?
- Did he spend billions of pesos for his media ad placements whilst thinking of re-cooping his investment when he becomes president?
- Did he really spend millions just to get Willie Revillame’s and Dolphy’s endorsement?
Before I end this section, I would like to ask Mr. Manny Villar himself a few questions:
1. Nakaligo ka na ba sa dagat ng basura? If yes, how does it feel? Are you like Emma (Glee) who became too much of an OC? If no, would you be willing to give it a try?
2. Nagpasko ka na ba sa gitna ng kalsada? I thought you had a humble abode at the slums of Tondo? How in the world did you end up spending Christmas on the streets? Or are you now going to tell us that you actually lived under one of those bridges?
3. Tunay ka bang isa sa amin? Or are you merely using those streetchildren (whom I’ve heard you only paid 1,000 or 10,000 pesos, whilst spending millions of pesos for already-rich actors) and even risking your mother (who looks like she was about to have a heart attack) for sympathy votes?
WE NEED A TRUE LEADER, MR. VILLAR. NOT A DRAMA KING.
Joseph Estrada
AGE: 72
POLITICAL PARTY: Puwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP)
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
- Ateneo de Manila University (expelled)
- Engineering, Mapua Institute of Technology (dropped out)
LEGISLATIVE PERFORMANCE
Senate: Five (5) years
EXECUTIVE PERFORMANCE
- Mayor of San Juan (1968)
- Vice President of the Philippines (1992)
- President of the Philippines (1998-2001 – impeached)
CIVIL STATUS: Married
Estrada gained popularity as a film actor and leveraged his popularity as an actor to make gains in politics.
In October 2000, Ilocos Sur governor Chavit Singson alleged that he had personally given the President P400 million as payoff from jueteng, as well as P180 million from the government price subsidy for the tobacco farmers’ funds. Singson’s allegation caused controversy across the nation, which culminated in the House of Representatives’ filing of an impeachment case against Erap, where presidential candidate Manny Villar fast-tracked the impeachment complaint.
Is he really “maka-masa” (people person), or is his charima only a byproduct of him being a once-famous action star?
Some people say he deserves another shot at Presidency given that he was not able to finish his term as the 13th president of the Philippines.
If he, in any way, gets elected as president and another impeachment case would arise: PLEASE DO NOT BLAME HIM. BLAME YOURSELVES FOR VOTING FOR HIM. Remember that not everyone deserves another chance; because sometimes, these second chances will only serve as an excuse for most people to try to screw up.
Stop and think about the state/status of our country and the unstableness of our government during his term. And only then must you decide if Erap really does deserve another chance.
Richard “DICK” Gordon

Philippine Coast Guard Auxilliary Officer
WORK EXPERIENCE:
Accra Law Office – Lawyer/Associate
Kong Commercial Philippines, Inc. – Director
Procter and Gamble Philippines – Brand Manager
SBMA – Founding Chairman and Administrator
CIVIL STATUS Married, Four (4) kids
Given Richard Gordon’s stellar credentials, I believe that he may be a strong contender for Presidency -- that is, if credentials is all that matters. Credentials wise, Dick Gordon has more than enough administrative and legislative background to run our country. Unfortunately for him, he lacks the means and the methods to sell himself wisely to the public.
Another disadvantage that Gordon have is that people perceive him as an arrogant and boastful politician who would do anything and everything in his power just to become the President of this country. Gordon tends to be a little too straightforward when it comes to conversing with his colleagues. And if he remains to act that way, will he be fit enough to attend conferences with foreign leaders and diplomats?
In all fairness to him, years of experience have molded Dick Gordon into knowing what this country needs. And at this state, we need a man with steel, yet sure and honest hands to rule us.
But given everything that I have said, Dick Gordon, along with Eddie Villanueva and Jamby Madrigal, is just making do with leftover scraps from Noynoy Aquino, Gibo Teodoro, Manny Villar, and Erap Estrada.
Eddie Villanueva

There is a reason why the separation of the Church and state was clearly stipulated in our Constitution; and that is to avoid religious discrimination. If we let one religion dominate the country, which religion would be it? What will happen to the other religions?
Villanueva’s campaign in the 2004 presidential election was never unnoticed because obviously he was the only candidate with a strong religious identity. And because of that image, he was accused of running due to his religious interest and probably a hidden plan of converting the whole country to Pentecostalism.
One look at his face and I start questioning his credibility and if he truly is fit and capable enough of making just and sound decisions for the entire country. But Bro. Eddie claims that he is the only moral candidate among his other contenders, and it is because of his morality that he plans to eradicate corruption in our country.
Being a man of God, I believe that Bro. Eddie should just focus on preaching God’s words, rather than trying to rule this country.
Having a strong faith in God is a very important factor, but if you want to lead this country, it would also require you to possess the ability to think critically and rationally. And yes, that is me questioning Eddie Villanueva’s morality and judgment.
