Biweekly I guest star as the girlfriend in "Boys Night In, NY Sports (or whatever sport is on) Edition." In the beginning, this sounded great! "I must be considered the cool girlfriend if I'm allowed here," was what I thought, "I bet I'll be included in some juicy conversations from a guy's perspective." No, no, no...after about my 300th night subjected to a bunch of guys commentating (not the chatting I was hoping for) on the sport of choice (most of the time more than one, because you know, there's always a hockey and basketball, or even baseball, game on at the same time) I've really started to wonder about this insane love between a man and his television sports. Tonight, I just watched three guys discuss, while watching the Yankees game, how terrible and boring this game is. They gave me the play-by-play; "Now he's going to take a walk, spit on the ball, there's going to be about 7 practice swings, and then maybe a pitch will be thrown." THANK YOU I KNOW, THAT'S THE ONLY THING I SEE. Sooo, why can't we change the channel? What is this testosterone-driven inability to watch any other television program when ANY sports event is on? I wake up to SportsCenter, fall asleep to SportsCenter, and watch a little SportsCenter intermittently when any game is on (I know, I really am the cool girlfriend). But, I don't know if these guys have noticed, the same thing is on every hour- so why do we need to watch it all day and night? The tune is catchy, I'll admit, but not enough to make me watch anything on repeat all day (unless it's How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days).
