Hymn #129
Where can I turn for peace? Where is my solace
When other sources cease to make me whole?
When with a wounded heart, anger, or malice,
I draws myself apart, searching my soul?
Where, when my aching grows, Where, when I languish,
Where, in my need to know, where can I run?
Where is the quiet hand to calm my anguish?
Who, who can understand? He, only One.
He answers privately, Reaches my reaching
In my Gethsemane, Savior and Friend.
Gentile the peace he finds for my beseeching.
Constant he is and kind, Love without end.In part of this hymn it is mentioned that we go through our own trials that, to us, feel like Gethsemane. It says "In my Gethsemane, Savior and Friend." We each must follow the footsteps of Jesus Christ. We all will at one time or another, go through our own Gethsemane, where it will seem like the world itself is falling on us. Where we will feel that we have nowhere to turn or nowhere to go. It will be different for all of Gods children, but one thing is sure. It will come.
It will be at this point in our lives where we will ask the questions in this hymn. Maybe not word for word, but at one time or another we will ask them. Where can I turn for peace? Where is the quiet hand to calm my anguish? Who can understand? It is at these times more than ever that we should turn to the Lord. He knows us and He loves us. He wants what is best for us and, like Christ, includes these Gethsemane's we go through. These experiences that feel will never end or will end us are what build us up. When we turn to the Lord, He can tell us how to overcome them. He answers privately and personally. We turn to Him in prayer. We ask Him what we should do and where we should go. Often the way He answers is through our study of the Holy Scriptures.
When we study His words, He can speak to us personally. One of the greatest promises we have recieved from Him is found in 2 Nephi 32:3
3 "...Feast upon the words of Christ; for behold, the words of Christ will tell you all things what ye should do."
The scriptures tell us all things that we should do. Not just things like go to church and say your prayers, but all things. No matter what the suffering we may be going through, whether it be the loss of a loved one, or our own personal mistakes, God can help us through it. It takes all of our effort, like it did Christ, to get through, but it is always possible. The Lord does not set us up for failure. He allows us the opportunity to overcome and grow. May we all turn to the Lord for guidance in all things, especially during the times we need His perfect guidance and love.
