Today we live in a world where we can get virtually any thing we want, very quickly. Weight loss, answers to questions, or eve extra strength and energy. Just mentioning these few I'm sure we can all think of different ways we can get these things fast. We've got weight loss surgeries or new diets coming out quite often, online search engines answer questions pretty quickly, or even a 5 hour engery drink. These options and options like them have been made very very accessable to us to make things convenient. It's so easy for us to get caught up in things like this. Fast food because I can't cook, or because I don't want to do the dishes, or whatever the reason. Texting during class or work because we can't wait to find out what happened on American Idol. Whatever it is, we easily get caught up with having just about everything at our disposal. Sometimes we need or want things that can't come to us right when we want it. Things like answers to our prayers, or Christ-like attributes of charity or obedience, or maybe even just to know that God loves us. Whenever we turn to the Lord for these kinds of answers, it almost always requires patience. Patience is more than just waiting for our answer or blessing from God. It is actively waiting. Doing all that we can possibly do to attain what it is we are seeking. I know that from personal experience when I ask the Lord for things like patience or understanding, He quickly gives me a situation where I can develop the patience or understanding I ask for. For example, I once asked Heavenly Father to help me learn patience. So what did He do? He allowed me to be put in a situation, by my own choices, where I broke my wrist. Not a huge deal at first. In fact, I actually didn't know it was broken for two weeks. After recieving some great council to see a doctor to get it fixed, I was told it was surely broken. The doctor informed me that I would be in a cast for about a month. Also not a huge deal, considering I was preparing to go out on my full-time mission soon. But after 2 months he would tell me that I required surgery to fix it. After the surgery had taken place, I was in a cast for a few months and then was required to do physical therapy. That was easily more painful than the break or the after effects of the surgery. My anticipated time of departure for my mission was constantly pushed back as my injury didnt heal. Finally, it had healed and I was cleared to come on my mission. After a very long and painful year of waiting, I could serve. The Lord offered me a chance to recieve the patience I had asked for. Little did I know it would take so much time or sacrifice on not only my part, but the parts of those around me. I'm sure they developed patience as well serving me as I was recovering from surgery. This year of waiting didn't include my sittting on the couch until I was healed, but rather, my trying to make the best of the situation, which I'll admit, seemed impossible at times. Through this particular trial, I learned to write with my left hand, which anyone trying to learn to be ambidextrious would agree, is very very hard. I learned that being angry or frustrated with our circumstances doesnt help time go by any quicker. I learned to trust in the Lord because He is in control and I need to follow Him.
There are countless other things I learned from this experience as well, but to stay on topic, the Lord answered my prayers. He had helped me learn the patience I was asking Him for. I'm definitely not perfect at it yet, but I have impoved greatly since this experience.
The Lord will often times help us learn the great and neccassary attribute of patience through our experiences. Let us not become caught up in the "I want it now" attitude, but rather "whatever you want, Lord" attitude. When we follow Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ great things happen. They can do more with our lives than we ever could. Let us be patient in all things the Lord seeth fit to inflict to inflict upon us. Let us not question whether or not He is there and listening because we don't see our answers immediately. This is my humble request as His representative in the sacred name of Jesus Christ, Amen
